Manganese carbide, Mn3C

Chinese name: Manganese carbide
English name :MANGANESE CARBIDE
Molecular formula :Mn3C
CAS number :12266-65-8
CBNumber:CB6122768
Molecular weight :176.82
MOLFile:12266-65-8.mol
Melting point: 1520°C
Properties: gray black powder
Density: 6.890 g/cm3
Appearance: acicular tetragonal crystal with metallic luster
Physical and chemical properties: insoluble in concentrated sulfuric acid and nitric acid, but can be decomposed by water or dilute acid to produce manganese hydroxide, hydrogen and hydrocarbons. It burns quickly in oxygen and interacts easily with fluorine and chlorine.

Synthesis method: Manganese carbide can be prepared by the reaction of powdered manganese and carbon mixture at about 2200°C, the heat of formation △fHm(298K)=-(15.06±12.55)kJ/mol. When smelting high-carbon ferromanganese or manganese silicon alloy in a blast furnace or electric furnace, the obtained is not pure manganese or manganese silicide, but manganese carbide, so the heat absorbed by the reaction is smaller than the reduction to metallic manganese or manganese silicide, that is, the reaction starts at a lower temperature, so there is more carbon in high-carbon ferromanganese.
Application: Manganese carbide hydrolysis method is one of the preparation methods of manganese tetroxide micropowder. A method of producing manganese tetroxide with carbon-manganese alloy, a method of producing manganese tetroxide with low selenium and high specific surface area by one-step process of carbon-manganese alloy, and a method of preparing Mn3O4 nano powder by hydrolytic oxidation of manganese carbide have been disclosed. Because there are no catalysts, acids, bases and other chemical reagents involved, the preparation of Mn3O4 by electrolytic manganese powder suspension oxidation is obviously a green process.
